Trauma-Related Concerns

Past experiences can leave lasting marks on how we feel, think, and move through the world. Trauma-informed therapy focuses on understanding those patterns, building stability, and working at a pace that feels manageable.

What trauma-related concerns can look like

Trauma isn't defined by the event itself — it's defined by its impact. Experiences that feel overwhelming, threatening, or deeply destabilizing can shape how the nervous system responds long after the situation has passed. This can show up in ways that aren't always obviously connected to what happened.

You might notice hypervigilance — a persistent sense of being on alert, easily startled, or scanning for danger even in safe situations. Or the opposite: emotional numbness, disconnection, or difficulty feeling present. Intrusive memories, nightmares, or strong reactions to reminders of past experiences are also common.

Trauma can also affect relationships, self-perception, and the ability to trust. Patterns like people-pleasing, difficulty setting limits, or a tendency to shut down in conflict can sometimes be traced back to earlier experiences. These responses made sense at the time — they were adaptations to difficult circumstances.

How therapy may help

Trauma-informed therapy at Aeros Mental Health focuses on understanding, stabilization, and building the internal resources to work with difficult material. This isn't about forcing you to revisit painful memories before you're ready — it's about creating a foundation of safety and developing skills that help you feel more regulated and grounded.

We'll work to understand how past experiences may be shaping current patterns, develop coping strategies for managing distress, and address the ways trauma may be affecting your relationships, your sense of self, and your daily functioning.

Please note that Aeros Mental Health provides outpatient individual therapy with a trauma-informed lens. We do not offer specialized trauma-processing protocols such as EMDR, Prolonged Exposure, or CPT. If those specific approaches are what you're looking for, we're happy to help you find a provider who offers them.

Approaches we may draw from

  • Grounding and stabilization techniques for managing distress
  • DBT-informed skills for emotional regulation and distress tolerance
  • Somatic-informed awareness of how the body holds stress and tension
